Colin Cramer

Director of Goalkeepers & Middle School Soccer, Assistant Upper School Soccer Coach

As an athlete turned coach, Colin Cramer’s journey in the world of sports began at a young age, driven by a passion to be the ultimate team player on every team he joined. His dedication and unselfishness ultimately led him to play collegiate soccer at Denison University as a goalkeeper.

After graduating from Denison, Colin transitioned into coaching, working with athletes ages 8 to 18 across several soccer organizations, including FC Greater Boston Bolts, GPS, Becoming Elite, and Seacoast United. While coaching at the club level, he also worked with high school prep programs such as New Hampton School and Thayer Academy, focusing not only on athletic performance but also on the holistic development of student-athletes. During this time, he earned his Master’s in Sports Leadership from Northeastern University. Most recently, he spent two years as the Head Varsity Soccer Coach at Lawrence Academy from 2024 to 2025.

Colin’s coaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that sports are powerful tools for personal growth, building both character and community. His primary goal is to help every athlete understand that they are a leader both on and off the field. To cultivate this mindset, he emphasizes that leadership emerges from the unique strengths each individual brings. He reinforces that leadership is not defined by titles or formal roles—it is a mindset and a set of behaviors that can be cultivated in everyone.

COACHING PHILOSOPHY

Teamwork, to me, signifies the collaborative effort of a group of individuals working together towards a common goal. It involves combining diverse skills, perspectives, and experiences to enhance problem-solving and productivity. Effective teamwork is characterized by open communication, mutual respect, shared responsibilities, and the ability to bridge differences for a cohesive effort. In sum, teamwork maximizes the potential of each member while promoting a supportive and motivating environment.

Success for my athletes means developing their personal character while maintaining the balance of achieving our team goals. To build their character, you have to let your players be who they are and understand what strengths they derive from their personality/uniqueness.

The significance of players being truly themselves and successfully embracing who they are as individuals within the soccer context goes far beyond simply participating in the sport. It's about fostering an environment that promotes personal growth, enhances performance, and ultimately contributes to overall well-being that both helps the team and individual.

In summary, confirming that your players are truly themselves and successfully embracing who they are as a person isn't just a matter of psychological well-being, but also a crucial factor in fostering peak performance, building a strong team culture, and promoting overall personal growth and fulfillment. This comprehensive understanding provides a more meaningful perspective on what it means to be successful both in the pursuit of sport and as an individual in society.

When I coach student-athletes, I make sure my training sessions are both fun and mentally exhausting while maintaining a strong level of personalized support from myself. An enjoyable and engaging atmosphere is essential for anyone to learn, especially kids.

My training sessions will often include fun games and activities that promote love for the game. While playing these fun games, players will also focus on the mental aspects of the game, including focus, motivation, and dealing with pressure as being the best player you can be is mostly mental. Within all of this, I make sure to tailor guidance that addresses both individual learning needs and team goals.

Competition in our soccer program is multi-faceted, consisting of a blend of regular season play, practice, tournaments, showcases, and various leagues. This continual structure allows for both competitive experiences and opportunities for player growth and development.

While playing in these events, we have to emphasize and demonstrate how team members should balance individual aspirations with the overall objectives of the team. When shared goals are emphasized, competition becomes a tool for collaboration rather than rivalry.

The soccer athlete pathway progresses from recreational youth leagues to more competitive club soccer, then to school teams, and then to elite academies, ultimately leading to college or professional opportunities. Within this framework, the key steps include skill development and getting your kids to get maximum exposure through a plethora of events such as showcases and tournaments.

“Success for my athletes means developing their personal character while maintaining the balance of achieving our team goals. To build their character, you have to let your players be who they are and understand what strengths they derive from their personality and uniqueness.”
