COACHING PHILOSOPHY
Teamwork is putting team success ahead of individual goals. It’s trusting and respecting coaches and teammates, and holding themselves accountable. Teamwork consists of teammates willing to support one another through both successes and failures.
We define success for our program by player development, academic achievement, and fostering a strong team culture. We define success for our athletes on the field when they compete, give their best effort, and exhibit respect for our opponent and the umpires. When we respect the game of baseball and play the game the right way – hustling on and off the field. The program's mission extends beyond the playing field, emphasizing the growth of the student-athlete as a whole person including citizenship and service on our campus and in our community.
Fast paced skill driven intense workouts designed to challenge players to find game speed in practice. Practice is permanent, not perfect. The more uncomfortable you are willing to get, the more progress you will make.
Spring trip to FL for 7-10 days – with 7-8 games. 20-25 games in the fall, full winter training program in state of the art training facility with indoor batting cages, mounds, and a full diamond.
Physicality, mental approach, and game IQ? We envision entry level players to most likely (not definite) be grades 6-9? to help players adjust to playing on 90’ diamond and college/prep level to be grades 10-13.
“Our mission goes far beyond wins and losses – we’re developing young people who understand that respect for the game, hustling on and off the field, and being accountable to each other are what really matter.”
– Richard Gilbride, Director of Baseball Operations

COACHING PHILOSOPHY
Teamwork is believing in something bigger than yourself. It’s putting team success ahead of individual goals. It’s trusting and respecting coaches and teammates, and holding themselves accountable. Teamwork consists of teammates willing to support one another through both successes and failures.
I define success for our program by personal, social, and player development; academic achievement, and fostering a strong team culture. I define success for our athletes on the field when they compete, give their best effort, embrace adversity, exhibit respect for our opponent and the umpires, and when we honor the game of baseball and play the game the right way – hustling on and off the field. The program's mission and success extends beyond the playing field, emphasizing the growth of the student-athlete as a whole person including citizenship and service on our campus and in our community.
Fast paced, skill driven, intense workouts designed to challenge players to find game speed and situations in practice. Practice is permanent, not perfect. The more uncomfortable players are willing to get every day in practice, the more progress they will make.
20-25 games in the fall, full winter training program in a state of the art training facility with indoor batting cages, pitching machines, Trackman, mounds, and a full diamond. 30-35 games in the spring, with a trip to Florida playing 7-8 games.
Physicality, explosiveness, mental approach, and game IQ. I envision entry level players to most likely (not definite) be grades 6-9 where I will help players adjust to playing on 90’ diamond. I envision college/prep level to be grades 10-PG, where we will showcase their talent and help connect student-athletes to coaches at the next level with the philosophy of finding the right fit at a place that will set MAI graduates up for forty years of life rather than just four years of baseball.
“Teamwork is believing in something bigger than yourself – putting team success ahead of individual goals. The program’s mission extends beyond the playing field, emphasizing the growth of the student-athlete as a whole person including citizenship and service on our campus and in our community.”

MESSAGE TO STUDENTS AND PARENTS
As a head prep school baseball coach, I am excited to welcome you to MAI, a program that will be built on excellence and character. Our mission is to develop not only elite athletes who can compete at the highest level, but also young men of integrity who lead with purpose on and off the field.
Over the last two years at Deerfield Academy, we are a combined 31-7. Last season, we were regular season and playoff champions in the CNEPSBL – the best prep baseball league in New England, and were also ranked #2 in the New England poll. We were 6-1 in exhibition games in Florida, finished 15-4 up north (9-1 in league play – regular season champs again), ranked #4 in New England, and have made it to the championship game in three out of the last four years – which no other team in our league has accomplished. I have placed fifty-three players in college in seven short years at Deerfield – including two Cornell commits, a Richmond commit, a Tufts commit, a Bowdoin commit, a Bates commit, and a Bentley commit in the ’25 class -and over one hundred-twenty players overall including my time at my last schools (Cathedral High School/Pope Francis). We have another six commits in the ’26 class.
When you join our family, you are committing to a culture of hard work and mental toughness that will prepare you for the challenges of college baseball and beyond. I look forward to the opportunity to help you reach your full potential.

Coaching across age groups
Middle School
(Grades 6-8)
We introduce young athletes to baseball in positive, welcoming, supported, learning environment. Our young players will get on field instruction nine months a year with be drilled, disciplined, and taught the “Masters Way” by high level experienced coaches.
Priority will be support and guidance with tangible short term and long term goals for our younger players. Focus on growth and development – trust the process. Foundational skills, technique, strength and conditioning, nutrition will be daily routine. Resilience and embracing adversity will be paramount principles to be learned at this level. We expect passionate players to be excited about practice every day.
Upper School
(Grades 9-12)
Training evolves for older students in much of the same way as Middle School, adding more intense and advanced instruction including but not limited to advanced hitting, throwing, fielding, and catching instruction alongside game strategy and the baseball IQ and game situational approach – push yourself – be disciplined especially when no one is watching.
Life lessons are taught through sports – being prompt, positive, coachable, open to constructive criticism, and collaboration. A responsible student-athlete is a good citizen and a good student, who cares about his studies.
College Prep / Elite Athletes
We have helped commit 400+players in our time, between Richard and his on field coaches. It’s about connecting student-athletes at the next level at places that will set them up for life. Think 40 years of life as opposed to 4 years of baseball. We will make sure that our student athletes commit to the college that is the best overall fit for them – size, location, academic program, etc.
We will support our athletes academically, socially, and athletically – we have many connections through our years of the Student Athletic Advisory Group, and have advised all of them regarding the application process, registering with the NCAA clearinghouse, and all other avenues needed during the college recruitment process.
