Born in the USSR, Kostin began skating at age 3 and trained under renowned coaches in Riga, Latvia, St. Petersburg, and Moscow. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1993, he moved to the United States and continued training with legendary coaches Evy and Mary Scotvold on Cape Cod. His area of expertise focuses on jump technique and overall technical skating skills, with significant emphasis on ensuring proper skill mastery and execution.

As an ISU Technical Specialist, Kostin has served on technical panels for the 2018 Olympics, 2016 and 2025 World Figure Skating Championships, European Championships, 2025 Grand Prix Final Championships, and multiple Grand Prix and Junior Grand Prix events.
